A CHANGING CLIMATE
The Territory region is a climate of extremes, experiencing hot temperatures, high rainfall and cyclone events. Rising CO2 levels, increasing temperatures, sea level increases and changing weather patterns are all predicted outcomes of climate change. Exactly how the Territory will be affected is still unknown but it is anticipated that rising seas will result in saltwater incursion into terrestrial freshwater systems, rainfall patterns may change and extreme events such as cyclones and droughts could become more commonplace.
The impacts of climate change have implications for NRM, for example changes to the potential distribution of weeds and pests, burning patterns and the economic productivity values of land and sea.
