PROTECTING THE HABITAT OF THE GREATER BILBY IN CENTRAL AUSTRALIA
The greater bilby (Macrotis lagotis) is the largest of the bandicoots and is listed as Vulnerable in the Northern Territory.
They have disappeared from over 80% of their historic range due to predation by foxes and cats, larger and more intense fires than in the past, and loss of habitat.
Territory Natural Resource Management (TNRM) has been contracted under the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program to deliver a project until 2023 that will improve the trajectory of the Greater Bilby in the Northern Territory's arid zone.
TNRM will form collaborative partnerships with Indigenous ranger groups and Traditional Owners in Central Australia to undertake a range of activities.
PROTECT BILBY HABITAT

Develop and implement fire management to increase food sources, maintain cover, and help prevent extensive wildfires

Implement predator control for foxes and cats

Conduct monitoring for habitat and predators before and after management implementation
MONITOR BILBY POPULATIONS

Undertake on-going monitoring of known bilby areas

Conduct surveys in areas that have not been visited recently

Identify potential new bilby sites
DEVELOP A REGIONAL CONSERVATION ACTION PLAN

Develop a plan with all ranger groups and Traditional Owners across the bilby’s range
